Oak wilt is the single most important thing about trimming trees in Dallas, and most homeowners have never heard of it until a tree is already dying. It spreads underground through root grafts between oaks planted near each other, which describes most Dallas streets, and above ground by beetles drawn to fresh pruning cuts. Those beetles are active February through June. A well-meant spring trim is one of the most reliable ways to introduce it to a healthy tree.
