A dead zone is usually one failed valve, not a failed system. A yard that browns in stripes is usually head spacing or pressure, not a controller. Most of what gets sold as a system replacement in Dallas–Fort Worth is a repair that somebody did not take the time to diagnose.
We start by running every zone and watching what the system actually does. You get told what is wrong, what it costs to fix, and what can wait. If the honest answer is that the system is past saving, you get that too, with the reasoning.
The most common call we get. A zone that will not fire is nearly always the valve rather than the controller: a failed solenoid, a torn diaphragm, or a wire broken where somebody dug a bed.
Heads that mist, spray the driveway, sit buried below grade, or never pop up. Cheap to fix, and the usual reason one part of a lawn browns while the rest looks fine.
A soft system across every zone points upstream: a partly closed backflow valve, a main line leak, or supply pressure that was never right. On clay a hidden leak shows as one patch that stays wet in August.

Yes. Our irrigation licensing is current. Texas requires a licensed irrigator for installing, altering, repairing, or servicing an irrigation system for compensation, and it is worth asking every contractor you consider for theirs. Anyone who dodges the question has answered it.
Usually not. A dead zone is almost always the valve rather than the controller, and a solenoid or diaphragm is an inexpensive part. The cost is in locating a buried valve box or tracing a broken wire, which is why we diagnose before quoting.
Pressure, and it is upstream of the heads. The usual culprits are a backflow shutoff left partly closed after winterisation, a main line leak, or supply pressure that never suited the system. We test rather than guess.
Repair, in most cases. Systems from the nineties often need heads, a controller, and a few valves rather than a rebuild. We will tell you when replacement genuinely is the cheaper path over a few years, and show the reasoning instead of asserting it.
Backflow assemblies are separately certified and many DFW cities require an annual test. We service the assembly and will tell you where your city stands on testing so you are not caught out by a notice.
Yes. Most DFW cities cap outdoor watering days, and the fix is programming plus the right runtime per zone rather than simply watering less. Deep and infrequent beats daily on clay in any case.
